Being on keto can be hard for most people but the health benefits on top of the weight loss could leave you feeling great if you stick to it. But what happens if a vegan was to take interest in the keto diet? With the limits on meat products plus the low-carb restriction it could easily put you through a downward spiral rather than an upward ladder to success.
So is it even possible to combine the two? Would I be able to come out of this on top or at the lowest of the low? Truth is, it’s not easy but it’s manageable if you start off at the right mindset and plan for it accordingly.
Full Disclosure: If you do decide to try this diet out, know that it’s super restrictive and might not be the best for you long term. In fact, dietitians don’t recommend that people do it long term.
Things you should know:
Fat is the key
As most people know, the keto diet’s main goal is to convert the body’s usual source of energy which is glycogen to ketones. And since ketones are only produced when glycogen levels are low and fat levels are high you definitely need to stock up on fat in order to stick to this diet. However, vegans might think it would be difficult since most fat sources come from animals. But relying on plant-based fat could be your best bet to make this work. Just make sure that they’re low-carbs though.
Lower your carb intake
The ratio of macros you need to be able to stay on ketosis is: 75% fat, 15% protein, and 20% carbs. Vegans may find it hard to give up carbs since it’s one of the key elements of the vegan diet, however, it’s not always the case. There are alternatives everywhere that not only have higher nutritional value but could also be delicious.
Rely on supplements
Since the vegan keto diet is restrictive in every sense of the word, you may not be able to reach your macros or get much nutritional value no matter how much you eat. Stocking up on supplements will help you go a long way in your vegan keto diet.
It’s not cheap
Since the diet is so restrictive some of the food available for you to eat might not be readily available for you. And since there are fewer options for you, there might not be a lot of variety in the food you eat. If poorly planned, you might not even last long on this diet.
Diets can be tricky enough to follow on its on but combining two at once may prove to be difficult. However, if you know what you’re getting into, if you planned thoroughly and you’re determined enough to stick to it, it’s definitely possible. Proceed with caution and good luck!
