Onnit MCT Coconut Oil

Onnit MCT Oil is a BPA-free, vegan-friendly, and sustainably sourced MCT oil from coconuts. Onnit claims the specific makeup of MCTs in their MCT oil will help “power up performance” with quick and easy fuel in the form of ketones, and is the perfect complement to ketogenic, paleo, and low-carb nutrition plans.

Their marketing message pushes the sustainable aspect—sourced from 100% coconuts, the product contains no palm oil, which makes it an environmentally attractive option—and there is the inclusion of lauric acid, a “MCT” that is not found in every MCT oil on the market.

Reviews on the website’s product page average at 4.7 out of 5 stars, and they’re holding solid at 4.5 out of 5 stars on Amazon, with many customers giving Onnit MCT Oil a shout-out for its ability to increase energy. Enough to get our notice, for sure. But, how does it hold up against competing MCT oils? And is the lauric acid in this product a boon or a bust? Let’s find out!

Ingredients and Side Effects

One tablespoon delivers 12.7 grams of medium-chain triglycerides from coconuts. That’s it! But it’s the breakdown of these MCTs that is of most interest: 41% caprylic acid (C8), 27% capric acid (C10), and 30% lauric acid.

C8 and C10 are shorter chain fatty acids that skip the digestive tract and zoom straight to the liver, where they are quickly broken down into ketones and then distributed to your body and brain through the bloodstream. These are the two MCTs you can expect to see in an MCT oil because they are responsible for the fast conversion of fat to ketones…which is the effect we want from a good MCT product.

As for the addition of lauric acid from coconut oil, well, here is where expert opinion differs somewhat. Lauric acid can be labeled as an MCT in the United States, but biochemists will tell you that it doesn’t behave the same way as truer MCTs do and definitely isn’t as effective at boosting ketone production as the shorter chain C8 and C10 MCTs are. That’s because lauric acid gets processed in the liver as a long-chain fatty acid and takes longer to digest. It can also raise cholesterol levels, which may not be ideal if you already have high cholesterol.

Onnit contends that the addition of lauric acid is a complement to the fast-burning C8 and C10 and can extend energy for longer and enhance digestion. But for those looking for traditional quick-converting MCT oils, you might not want to sacrifice more optimal concentrations of C8 and C10 (typically at 60% and 40% respectively) for the addition of lauric acid.

An added benefit of lauric acid is its immune-boosting effects, but C8 and C10 also have antimicrobial properties, so the necessity is dependent on your personal health goals. Lauric acid, is, however, nature’s best source of monolaurin, which is a nutrient that is also in human breast milk and is crucial to immune function.

It’s important to note that some companies add in lauric acid because they can sell their MCT oil cheaper. Which leads us straight to our price check.

Price and Quality

One bottle priced at $21.21 contains 47 servings of MCTs, so it’s approximately 45 cents a serving. They suggest taking 1 to 4 tablespoons a day, and mixing it into coffee, smoothies, protein shakes, and salad dressings. One bottle can last you anywhere from 12 to 47 days.

We’ve seen cheaper priced MCT oil products to choose from, especially if you plan on taking it 4 times a day.

On the official website, Onnit claims their MCT oil is harvested from 100% coconuts, and processed for purity, but we found no mention that they followed FDA CGMP requirements.

We’d like to give Onnit a special nod for currently offering a 15% discount to military service men and women on all their products, including their MCT Coconut Oil.

The price becomes even more attractive when you subscribe (autoship can be set anywhere between 2 weeks and 3 months) and save 15%.

Customer Reviews

On the Onnit website and Amazon, reviewers are quick to point out how much more energy they have after taking Onnit’s MCT Coconut Oil.

Here are some reviews:

“I love this product! I mix it and the powdered collagen in my coffee and you can’t even taste it! My hair and nails have grown so fast and are so healthy! I have my friends and family purchasing it as well! Great product!”

“This is amazing for Ketosis! After having a cheat day turn into a cheat weekend, this is the first step to getting back on track and producing ketones. Between MCT Oil and exogenous ketones, I am back in ketosis within 24 hours!!!”

“I have high energy, mental clarity, positive mood and I’m sustained for 3-4 hours before needing a solid snack or meal.”

“This stuff is great. I have been drinking bullet proof coffee for about a year now and I always use Onnits MCT oil. Love it. Never start a day without it. Feels like im shot out of a cannon.”

The not-so-positive reviews address stomach upset issues and the design of the cap.

“I have no idea if this works well or not, because every time I took it I had explosive diarrhea for hours. Very painful.”

“Love this stuff and happy I found Onnit! Just one “complaint”…the bottle desperately needs a new cap! It’s impossible to not have some spillage with that terrible little hole it comes out of.”

“I like this oil a lot, but the packaging (squirt bottle) makes it hard to measure because it squirts out so fast. I have wasted some because it squirts out on to the counter instead of into the spoon.”

“For some reason this MCT oil just did not work well for me. I find it to be very chalky and it coats my tongue in a weird way. I wanted to try it to see if I like it, and I prefer other brands over this one. It makes my bulletproof tea unpalatable. Bummer, but oh well!”

The digestive ailments in the aforementioned reviews may be a result of taking MCT oil in general. If you aren’t used to MCT oil, it’s best to start slowly, as the body, particularly your digestive system, needs time to acclimate.
